A member of the German Parliament Peter Beyer said in Pristina on Tuesday “it isn’t fair that Kosovo’s citizens don’t have a visa-free regime" and called on the five European Union countries that had not recognised the independence of Serbia’s former province to do that, the Beta news agency reported.

He reiterated German view that any deal between Belgrade and Pristina should not involve border changes.

“Kosovo should keep the existing borders. It’s a pity that all counties have not recognised its independence. I call upon the five EU states to do that, and Germany is, as always, ready to support Kosovo,” Beyer, the deputy from German chancellor Angela Merkel’s party, and the Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation at the Federal Foreign Office said after meeting Kosovo’s outgoing Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj.

Speaking about the visa liberalisation for Kosovo’s population, Beyer said he could not be precise about the date, but added it could happen before Christmas (December 25 according to the Georgian calendar).

“Germany supports Kosovo’s integration into the visa-free regime. It’s not fair that it is the only country which doesn’t have it. I won’t give a date, but it will probably be a Christmas gift,” he said.

Beyer was in Belgrade on Monday, meeting Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic whom he, according to a statement from Vucic’s office, said that the German interest was that the region was stable and economically healthy and that “the EU does not have a future without the Western Balkans in the bloc.”
