The Belgrade City Assembly voted unanimously on Thursday to ban plastic bags in the Serbian capital as of 2020.

The decision says that only biodegradable bags will allowed and bans the sale of other plastic bags.

Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic he does not expect the immediate implementation of the new regulations, considering old habits and added that inspections will be stepped up. He recalled that some two billion plastic bags are used in Belgrade every year.
