An ecological disaster struck the Ivanjica municipality in western Serbia when heating oil spilled into the Golijska Moravica river on Tuesday.
That river flows from Mt Golija through Ivanjica and on to the Zapadna Morava river.
The heating oil spilled from tankers at the Special Rehabilitation Hospital in Ivanjica where 70 tons of it was stored for the winter.
Deputy Mayor Momcilo Mitrovic said that the environmental and communal inspectors reacted immediately to stop the spill. “The important thing is to stop more oil from spilling into the river because the Moravica passes through Arilje, Pozega and Cacak and could cause a huge ecological catastrophe in all of western Serbia,” he said.
Local residents said that the oil slick is floating on the surface of the river with a very unpleasant smell spreading from it. The Internal Affairs Ministry’s Emergency Situations Sector is expected to deploy its personnel to help deal with the oil spill.
