The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) said on Wednesday it agreed that the next general elections would be held either on March 22 or 29, the Beta news agency reported.

The final date would be decided after consultation with the party’s leader and head of state Aleksandar Vucic and SNS sessions probably by the end of September, the Vecernje Novosti daily wrote.

Serbia's opposition gave Vucic and SNS a deadline by mid-September to meet their demands for free and fair election rules and free media or face the boycott of the ballot.

The top party’s leadership, it added, would have to consider an overall situation in the country and the region and to decide who should be on its ballot paper.
