The reconstruction of a section of highway which has never been used will cost Serbian taxpayers at least 13 million Euros, the Insajder investigative news portal reported on Thursday.
The section of highway between the towns of Ub and Lajkovac on the Corridor 11 route was inaugurated in 2014 but has never been opened to traffic.
Insajder said that cracks in the road and landslides have been reported and added that the Construction Ministry has made an initial estimate of the cost of the reconstruction at 13 million Euros. That section of highway cost some 75 million Euro to build, the portal said.
Insajder said that the police and prosecution launched an investigation into the persons responsible for the damage two years ago. The investigation has revealed that the builders did not use the right materials for that section of highway and the contract with the Planum and Putevi Uzice companies was terminated. The contract to reconstruct the road was given to the Chinese Shandong which is already working on the Corridor 11. Shandong was awarded the contract without a tender on the basis of an inter-state agreement and has sub-contracted the Serbian company Energoprojekt for the job.
The Construction Ministry filed criminal charges against 14 people, including former Minister Milutin Mrkonjic, over the construction of that section of highway.
