Serbia’s Minister of Interior condemned of Sunday the attack against an activist in Novi Sad on Friday, saying that authorities obtained information that may lead to who the perpetrators were.
Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic would not reveal more details, arguing that he does not want to jeopardise the investigation but he added that he does not understand anyone in Serbia who wants to resolve any problems that way.
“Nothing can be resolved through violence. Police are doing their job, they will provide evidence for the court, we are advocating for the punishment to be as strict as possible so we eradicate violence,” he said.
The victim, Dejan Bagaric, is a philosophy student, an activist of the Democratic Party and one of the organisers of the ‘1 in 5 million’ protest in Novi Sad. He was assaulted on Saturday evening at the university’s campus.
Bagaric is a member of the ‘United Action Roof over One’s Head’ association, which said that two of its activists were beaten after they protested against logging.
