Telecommunications Minister Rasim Ljajic told Radio Free Europe on Monday that there is no reason for Serbia to break off cooperation with Huawei despite the restrictions that Google imposed on the Chinese company.
„We don‘t want to become collateral damage in the conflict between the big telecommunications companies. This is a clash of two giants,” the minister said, adding that Serbia has signed a number of contracts with Huawei.
“By the end of next year, 750,000 households will be on an optical network as the result of a 150 million Euro contract with Huawei,” Ljajic said. He said that many telecommunications companies in Europe have similar contracts which they have no intention of breaking off because Huawei is the biggest supplier of telecommunications equipment in the world.
The minister said that the Serbian government is not considering any special legal measures to prevent Huawei from transferring data to the Chinese authorities. He added that there have been no security threats involving the Chinese company in Serbia.
