Residents of Belgrade’s central Stari Grad municipality will block Republic Square on Wednesday, protesting what they say is the destruction of the heart of the city.

A statement from the Stari Grad municipal authorities said the 12-hour blockade would begin at 08:00 on Wednesday to protest the construction work which has closed a part of the city centre for traffic.

It added that the blockade was part of efforts to defend several locations in the municipality following the ruling by a Belgrade court, ordering the city authorities to stop work on the construction of a cable car between Kalemegdan fortress and New Belgrade.

Municipal Mayor Marko Bastac and other opposition leaders have staged protests at the construction site on Republic Square in an effort to prevent what they said is the destruction of the heart of the city.
