Serbia’s president and prime minister tweeted messages of support to France over the fire which devastated the Notre Dame cathedral overnight.
Writing in Serbia and English, President Aleksandar Vucic expressed solidarity and sadness with “our French friends” and made an offer of help in the renewal of the cathedral.
All citizens of Serbia are sad because of the Notre-Dame. We are with our French friends and we are ready to help the renewal of this symbol of French and world civilization.— Александар Вучић (@predsednikrs)April 15, 2019
For her part, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic wrote that she is thinking of Paris in both French and English.
The roof and spire of the Notre Dame cathedral caught fire on Monday afternoon. The blaze was contained overnight with one firefighter and two police officers injured.
Several pro-government tabloids said on their web sites that the fire was “God’s punishment” because the flag of Kosovo had been raised in front of Notre Dame. All those stories were later retracted.
