The opposition Democratic Party (DS) condemned on Thursday any relativisation of the Bosnian Serbs war-time political leader Radovan Karadzic’s life imprisonment sentence and called on President Aleksandar Vucic “to stop the campaign of portraying war criminals as heroes,” the Beta news agency reported.
In its statement, DS said the Wednesday’s verdict passed on Karadzic for war crimes in Bosnian 1992-1995 war “is crucial for facing the past, establishing responsibility and creating conditions for building the future without the burden from the past.”
“That (the verdict) gives satisfaction to the victims and hope to those who fight for the ideals of freedom, peace and understanding. It is where our responsibility lies, as individuals and parties, the society as a whole to, in the time ahead of us, disable the revisionist ideas, nationalistic rhetorics and violence against those who think differently,” the DS statement said.
The nationalist movement Dveri leader Bosko Obradovic has said on Wednesday his opinion on Karadzic’s sentence is personal and not of the SzS whose member his organisation is. "I don’t recognise the Hague Court and none of its verdicts, but I won’t deal with it any more. I don’t go into the history, in what was happening in the Bosnian civil war. That will be an issue when we free ourselves from Vucic’s dictatorship.”
Karadzic was sentenced to life in prison by the Appeals Chamber of the international war crimes tribunal in the Hague.
The Appeals Chamber judges at the UN Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals overturned the 40-year sentence handed down by the trial chamber for crimes against humanity committed during the war in Bosnia.
The official Belgrade has so far remained quiet about the verdict, while the ultra-nationalist Serbian Radical Party (SRS) and ruling coalition’s Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) called it unjust and scandalous.
On the other side, the oppostion DS, League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV), Movement of Free Citizens (PSG) and Liberal Democrat Party (LDP) all agreed that the people responsible for war crimes had to be brought to justice.
