The region could face destabilization unless Belgrade and Pristina reach a final agreement this year, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci said on Wednesday.
The Serbian state TV reported him as saying that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue to normalize relations and reach a final agreement is unavoidable.
“There is not doubt that if we do not reach an agreement we will enter a zone which risks to destabilize the region,” he told a conference on the dialogue in Pristina.
Thaci said the recent letters from US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo provide clear assurances that an agreement with Serbia includes mutual recognition.
He said that the time has come to leave behind the animosity which caused the tragedy in Kosovo and added that the talks in Brussels will not be easy. “We want to clear up our relationship with Serbia which can only be achieved through the dialogue which has the support of the US and European Union. The time has come to leave hostility behind us,” Thaci is quoted as saying.
