James Appathurai, the NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, told N1 television the Western Balkans was of strategic importance to NATO, adding the Alliance had no intention of expanding to the region.
He said NATO was not pushing any country to join, but kept an open door for every state that wanted to become a member of the Alliance.
Appathurai also said NATO respected Serbia’s military neutrality, mentioning some other non-member countries the Alliance cooperated very well with.
He said Serbia’s relations with Russia presented no problem to NATO whatsoever and added the Alliance would like to iron up ties with Moscow, but Russia had to start respecting the international law and the agreements before that.
Appathurai also spoke about a link between NATO and the European Union membership and said he would like people in Serbia to know more about the cooperation between the Alliance and their country.
