Foreign Minister of Serbia Ivica Dacic said in Strasbourg on Thursday that Belgrade opposed Kosovo’s accession to the Council of Europe (CoE), adding the move would be a clear violation of the international order and the statute of that pan-European organisation, the Beta news agency reported.

At the ceremony marking 15 years of Serbia’s membership to the CoE, Dacic warned that Belgrade believed that “any Kosovo’s membership before the institutional end of the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue would present a great danger to the regional stability.”

He said that it would be better for Pristina “to turn to the dialogue than to try to join international organisations,” adding he expected that the number of states across the world that had recognised Kosovo’s independence would be under one hundred by the end of the year.

Pristina has denied that several countries Belgrade said had withdrawn their recognition did it and described such information as fake news.

Speaking about Serbia’s membership, Dacic said the country had an enormous benefit from it, primarily in harmonising the legislative, protection of human rights, the rule of law and democracy in its broadest sense, adding that the main benefit for the citizens was that they came under the jurisdiction of the European Court for Human Rights.
