Nine patients in Serbia have been confirmed to have contracted the West Nile virus this year, the Serbian Public Health Institute said on its web site.

The report said that there are another two suspected cases of West Nile virus infection which is carried by mosquitoes and recommended the use of insect repellents.

According to the Institute, four of the confirmed cases have been reported by health care institutions in Belgrade and the rest were reported in areas along the Danube basin. The patients are all adults, aged 43 to 83, the report said, adding that 10 of the 11 patients suffer from associated chronic diseases.

The first case of West Nile Virus infection was confirmed in Serbia in the summer of 2012 and a total of 574 cases (including 61 deaths) have been registered in the country since then, the Institute said, adding that 288 cases of the virus were reported in European Union member states and neighbouring countries in 2017 alone.
