A Serbian Internal Affairs Ministry official said on Monday that the results achieved by the Serbian police over the past four years are much better than earlier, seizing more drugs and arresting their own for corruption.

Ministry State Secretary Dijana Hrkalovic said that the police seized a total of 13.7 tonnes of narcotics in that period which is 43 percent more than in the four previous years.

“Besides seizing more drugs, the number of crimes committed in the country has dropped by 9 percent, property crimes by 17 percent and murders by 19 percent since Minister (Nebojsa) Stefanovic took office,” Hrkalovic is quoted as saying in a press release.

The police also arrested 768 police officers and employees, including 110 ranking Internal Affairs Ministry officials following investigations into corruption.

She said greater efforts would be invested to “reduce the presence of synthetic and other drugs on the streets”, adding that the police discovered the first ecstasy laboratory in the country last year after seizing 1.8 million tablets of that drug. According to media reports, the police have found a new kind of ecstasy pill, the so-called Red Bull, in Serbia.

Hrkalovic said more than half of the clashes between criminals have been solved by the Belgrade police.   She said cooperation was excellent with the police in Spain, the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria.
