Heavy rain that flooded Serbia’s eastern town of Petrovac na Mlavi stopped later on Friday and the planned evacuation of population proved unnecessary.
A failure of the dam on the river Busur near the town caused floods which spread to the rest of the Branicevo district and forced authorities to declare an emergency situation.
The dam broke on Thursday night due to heavy rain, letting vast quantities of water into the town and adjacent villages.
There have been no reports on human casualties, but material damage includes the almost complete destruction of many households and damage to the region’s agriculture.
Interior Ministry’s chief for Emergency Situations Predrag Maric told media that all necessary measures had been taken, adding people’s lives have not been endangered.
Maric said that a massive quantity of rain last night caused the dam to broke.
