President Aleksandar Vucic voiced hope that the European Union will keep the door open for Serbia, adding that the country has to change and improve itself.
“We can and have to change Serbia and we need peace and agreement with our neighbours,” he said at a ceremony to mark the start of construction for a new German embassy building in Belgrade.
Serbia has to listen to others and ask others to hear what it has to say, he said. “Our request to our German friends is to listen to what Serbia thinks and wants before taking a decision about it but, of course, the decision is always up to you,” the president said, adding that Serbia is prepared to promote bilateral cooperation with Germany.
German Foreign Ministry envoy Christian Hellbach said at the ceremony that Germany’s clear stand is that Serbia should be a member of the European Union. “Germany is clear in its stand that Serbia and the countries of this region should be members of the EU and should be sure that once they knock on the door of the EU that door will be opened,” he said.
Hellbach said that the EU will not be complete without the countries of the Western Balkans, adding that they have a common security interest in joining the Union.
