Lidl, a German global discount supermarket chain, based in Neckarsulm, opened its logistic centre in Serbia ’s town of Nova Pazova situated in the country’s northern province of Vojvodina and said it would expand the business with two more stores by the end of this year.

The company’s representatives said on Tuesday Lidl planned to open between 10 and 20 supermarkets in Serbia.

Nova Pazova’s centre employs 180 workers and has a capacity of supplying more than 1,000 stores.

Lidl says it has over 10,000 supermarkets around the world, with 10 million customers and 150 logistic centres.

German ambassador to Serbia Axel Dittmann attended the opening ceremony accompanying Serbia’s high ranking officials including President Aleksandar Vucic, Trade Minister Rasim Ljajic and Vojvodina’s Prime Minister Igor Mirovic.

Lidl’s general manager in Serbia Tomislav Sapina said the company planned to be a long-lasting partner of Serbia and that the consumers would have a choice of fresh and high-quality goods at best price.

“Lidl’s arrival is a symbol of our country’s progress since the company has its businesses in 28 European states which Serbia wants to join,” Vucic said, adding the Lidl invested 55 million Euros in Nova Pazova’s centre and took on 50 local contractors with 2,000 workers.

Ambassador Dittmann said that in addition to new jobs, Lidl would bring the technology and knowledge and would include local suppliers in its chain.

He has added that 400 German companies work in Serbia and that they employ over 45,000 people.
