Albanian and Serb journalist organizations staged protests in Kosovo to mark World Press Freedom Day and draw attention to attacks on members of their profession.
The Association of Professional Journalists of Kosovo (AGK) held its protest gathering in Pristina under the slogan Impunity Kills Freedom of Expression.
The protest participants demanded that the perpetrators of attacks and threats against journalists be brought to justice.
The AGK’s Majlina Aliu said at the protest that there had been eight cases of threats, physical assault and damages inflicted on the property of journalists this year, warning that there was no institutional will to deal with the issue while Kosovo-Metohija Journalists’ Society President Budimir Nicic said he expects the Specialized Chamber for war crimes to deal with cases of journalists who were killed or are missing within its jurisdiction and other cases to be investigated and prosecuted by the EULEX mission and Kosovo prosecutors.
A protest gathering, organized by the Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) was held earlier in the town of Gracanica with AGK members present.
