Tomatoes imported from Turkey are safe to eat, Serbia's Agriculture Ministry says
Serbia’s Agriculture Ministry told the Beta news agency on Tuesday (April 10) that tomatoes imported from Turkey are safe to eat despite labels saying the skin was not safe for human consumption.
The ministry said labels with that warning were printed by the importer for boxes of citrus fruits and the warning was not removed when new labels were printed for tomatoes.
Photographs of labels on boxes of tomatoes warning that the skin of the product was not safe for human consumption appeared on social media.
Samples of the Turkish tomatoes were tested in an accredited laboratory and the entire shipment of 20,000 kilograms was declared safe to eat, the ministry said.
